FOOTBALL

Football is a team game, and so development is typically best achieved via squad/team training. However, there are many benefits to more isolated training, for example, rehab following injury, relationship development, basic action work to address a technique issue or to simply provide

a player with total focus and attention to help them with a concern or to hone existing skillset.

Andy’s football coaching offer is threefold: one to one, small group, and squad coaching.

One to one sessions start with an initial meeting with the player and their parents where applicable, the gain a full understanding of what’s needed to be achieved. Following this will be sessions combining game analysis, on-pitch training, role models, and Red2Blue.

For small groups (2-6 players), basic action practice can be progressed to football action development. Squads can utilise small group sessions by attending in their respective units (defence/mid-field/forward).

Squad coaching compensates for the fact some teams only meet and train once per week. Following a briefing from the manager and analysing the team’s game performance, Andy will set about planning sessions which focus on giving the players a deeper understanding of their playing style and tactical intentions.

CASE STUDY

Ryan.jpg

Ryan Trevitt

Brentford FC

Andy Maciel has been working with Ryan since the age of 10, and thanks to his connections, he facilitated a trial for Ryan with BFC when he turned 18. Since then, Ryan's career has been on an upward trajectory, with a promising future ahead of him. Currently, he is represented by one of the top agents in the game.

Both the club and Ryan's agent have expressed astonishment that he was not part of the academy system. Ryan and his father credit Andy's coaching and guidance as instrumental in securing his professional contract. Andy took Ryan on tours to Denmark, Belgium, and Spain, providing valuable experiences and development opportunities. As the captain of Andy's team, Ryan achieved success by winning the Futsal National Cup twice, which earned him a call-up to the England futsal camp at St. George's Park.

During his youth, Ryan faced rejection from clubs like CFC, FFC, and QPR, which left him feeling deflated. However, with the help of Red2Blue, Andy supported Ryan in using these setbacks as motivation to believe in his ability and resilience. Andy takes pride in the impact he has had on Ryan's development and continues to work with him on a one-on-one basis.

On June 5, 2023, BFC announced that Ryan had been promoted to the first team squad in preparation for the upcoming 2023/24 season. Andy is thrilled for Ryan and his family, as he has witnessed firsthand the progress and achievements Ryan has made. Furthermore, several of Ryan's teammates, whom Andy also coached at LYFC from under 11 to under 18, have gone on to play professional and semi-professional football, with three of them securing scholarships to play in the United States.

Mentoring

Having coached for many years and been tutored by various educators and football bodies, Andy has produced a mentorship offer which he hopes will help coaches starting out on their journey, and give others an opportunity to reflect on their journey and look at areas they may not have thought or known about!

Andy's aim is to support new coaches with knowledge & tools which will help them to embrace their role, give confidence and most importantly create an environment for the players in their charge, which will enable them to take maximum enjoyment from their football experiences whilst developing along the way. It is important that the coach too, enjoys thier work and finds fulfilment from it.

The coaching paradox...

"The more we talk about learning stuff and the less we talk about winning stuff, the better we get at developing excellence and the more likely we are to win“
